The Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (CSUVTH) in Fort Collins, Colorado is seeking applicants for a veterinary ophthalmology position.  This position is flexible, anywhere from a 0.50 to 1.0 full time employee (FTE) position. Salary $80,000 – 170,000 (0.5-1.0 FTE). Salary is commensurate with FTE, experience and qualifications.

A signing bonus and/or moving expenses may be considered for successful candidates.

This is position will have a 1-year contract with possibility for renewal.

Essential Job Duties

The successful candidate should have a strong interest in the diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of complex ophthalmologic conditions in primarily dogs, cats, and exotics.  The successful candidate is expected to provide superior patient care by utilizing CSU’s cutting-edge surgical instrumentation and diagnostic technologies (CT, MRI, PET-CT, ultrasonography, and fluoroscopy) as indicated.  Clinical duties will consist of supervision of patient & client care for patients presented to the Ophthalmology Service. Duties of the successful candidate will include teaching of veterinary students, interns, and residents.  Participation in weekly didactic resident training including journal clubs, and daily student case rounds will be encouraged.  The faculty the Ophthalmology Service provide support for after-hours emergencies and the successful candidate will be expected to provide after-hours support for house officers. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • A DVM or equivalent degree. 

  • American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ACVO) or European College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ECVO) board certification or eligibility by start date.

  • Eligibility to obtain a State of Colorado Academic Veterinarian license.

  • Demonstrated history of excellence in clinical work

  • Demonstrated collegiality and contributions to a high-performance team

  • Experience in the instruction of veterinary students, interns and residents

Decision Making

The applicant should be responsible and able to work both independently and in a team environment.  This position is required to provide diagnoses and surgical treatment of small animal and exotic ophthalmologic conditions.  This position is required to have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (or equivalent) and be board certified or eligible by the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ACVO) or European College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ECVO).  Examples of decision making include the following:

  • Medical management of ophthalmology cases using clinical presentation and diagnostic results to provide differential diagnoses and medical and/or surgical treatment options.

  • Exceptional microsurgical technique and intra-operative surgical decision making.

  • Opportunity for teaching residents, interns, and veterinary students during clinical rotation.

Environment Overview

The Ophthalmology Service at the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital evaluates, diagnoses, and treats a broad array of diseases that either primarily or secondarily affect the ocular system. The Ophthalmology Service has high-quality facilities, a strong clinical caseload, and a great support team. The Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a well-equipped, full service veterinary referral hospital. The Ophthalmology Service currently consists of one full-time and one part-time board-certified faculty ophthalmologists, three ophthalmology residents, and two full-time and one part-time ophthalmology technicians. Clinical facilities include fully equipped surgical suites supporting extraocular and intraocular procedures. Two exam rooms and one treatment room for client consults and procedures, respectively.  Advanced diagnostic imaging facilities on-site include helical CT scanner, PET, and 1.5 and 3 Tesla MRI.
