Animal Vision Center of Virginia, in conjunction with Armour Veterinary Ophthalmology Residency

Animal Vision Center of Virginia, in conjunction with Armour Veterinary Ophthalmology in Washington, DC, is now accepting applications from qualified individuals for a three-year comparative ophthalmology residency, commencing July 2023. Primary duties and scheduling of the resident will be with Animal Vision Center of Virginia, with supplemental training provided by Armour Veterinary Ophthalmology. 

Our mission is to guide and support our residents through a detailed didactic and clinical training program to create an exceptional experience and high-quality veterinary ophthalmologist.  We will provide clinical training in all aspects of diagnostic and therapeutic veterinary ophthalmology of domestic and exotic pet animal species, in compliance with the guidelines established by the ABVO. Upon successful completion of the residency program, the resident will have submitted all necessary materials for approval by the credentials committee of the ABVO, and be eligible to sit for the ABVO examinations.

Position Summary

Animal Vision Center of Virginia is a busy, privately-owned ophthalmology practice that affords a strong clinical and surgical caseload for resident training. Within our hospitals, we offer state-of-the-art surgical facilities; team members who are compassionate, well trained and efficient at improving workflow; and strong support and collaboration with the regional base of 500-plus local veterinarians. The resident will be under the direct guidance of ACVO diplomates Dr. Heather Brookshire and Dr. Micki Armour.   

Qualifications

1. Candidates must be a licensed DVM able to practice in the U.S.

2. Must have completed or in the process of completing a 12-month clinical veterinary experience (rotating internship) or equivalent experience from the private practice.

3. Citizenship or legal resident status in the United States or H1-B Visa status.

Required Application Materials

1. A personal statement describing the applicant’s background, reasons for applying for this residency, and career goals.

2. Curriculum vitae with names and contact information of 3-5 references.

3. Three to five letters of reference from faculty members, research mentors, and/or practicing veterinarians, ideally addressing the candidate’s eagerness to learn, communication skills, work ethic and clinical aptitude in veterinary medicine.  Letters should be submitted by the authors directly to Dr. Heather Brookshire (HBrookshire@DVM.com)

4. Official transcripts, including grade point average from all post-secondary institutions attended and your class rank in veterinary school.

Armour Veterinary Ophthalmology provides ophthalmic care for the State Department and other government agencies, the National Zoo, the Baltimore Aquarium, Owl Moon Raptor Center, K-9 police dogs and service animal groups and other organizations.  The city is filled with museums, excursions and festivals when you need a distraction.
