Veterinary Ophthalmology Specialty Internship
The College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech is offering a paid 1-year specialty internship in veterinary ophthalmology. The ophthalmology internship program begins on or about July 15, 2025. The salary for this position is $38,625, plus health care benefits. The clinical ophthalmology service at the VA Tech Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) is supported by 3 dedicated ophthalmology service technicians, a case coordinator, one resident and two faculty members.
The goal of the ophthalmology internship program is to provide the successful applicant with a mentored experience in all aspects of clinical veterinary ophthalmology, with priorities to include ophthalmic diagnostic and surgical skills and appropriate case management approaches in preparation for subsequent application to ABVO residency training programs. Additional goals include strengthening clinical reasoning and communication skills and experience in clinical research.
The ophthalmology intern will participate in all clinical activities of the ophthalmology service, including after hours and weekend ophthalmology emergency duty. The intern will assume small and large animal patient care responsibilities under the supervision of an ophthalmology faculty member. Additional duties will include timely client and referring veterinarian communications and assisting in instruction of veterinary medical students. Participation in the house officer seminar program and weekly ophthalmology resident rounds (journal club, image recognition, topic rounds, histopathology) is required.
Pre-requisites for Acceptance:
1. DVM degree or its equivalent and successful completion of North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE).
2. One-year rotating internship or practice equivalent.
3. Demonstration of professional motivation and excellent interpersonal skills.
4. Eligibility to work in the United States at the time the internship begins (US citizen or have suitable visa status), ability to communicate effectively in English and eligibility to hold a veterinary intern/resident license in the State of Virginia.

1. Current curriculum vitae, which includes veterinary college attended, year graduated and class rank.
2. A personal statement describing your background, reasons for applying for this internship, and your career goals.
3. Three letters of recommendation from faculty members or practitioners who have worked with you. At least one letter must be from an ACVO diplomate. These letters should address aptitude and performance in the clinical setting (clinical technical skills, knowledge base and clinical reasoning/ability to apply knowledge in the clinical setting), ability to communicate effectively and work well with others. Recommendation letters should be sent directly by the letter writer to the application email below.
4. Transcript from veterinary school attended (PDF copy is acceptable. An official transcript will be required for the selected candidate).

** The internship position will be filled between January 27-29, 2025.
